1984 Audi Quattro
Unique is an overused term for classic cars. Not so in this case. When a Formula 1 World Champion who the following year became Indy Car Champion flies out to Germany to collect HIS Audi Quattro and drive it back home to the Isle of Man you are talking about a unique and highly significant piece of motorsport history. This is the great Nigel Mansell’s Quattro and it presents in superb virtually concours unmodified condition.
The Audi Quattro is an icon of motoring history and is increasingly desirable as each day passes. This car has that significant extra added importance by being the recipient of a thorough restoration and being the property or ‘Our Nige’
The UR Quattro defined Audi to this date and transformed the fortunes of Audi with its rally bred four-wheel drive system and suspension allowing the punchy turbocharged engine to humble many a ‘supercar’.
First registered to Nigel Mansell on the 13th of June 1984 there is a registration document and first tax disc with his name and address confirming ownership to Mansell. We can imagine him spiriting around the Isle of Man in this car. At the time Mansell was driving for Team Lotus. Mansell sold the car when joining soon after joining Williams F1. Red 5 was his race number and his red, 5 cylinder Audi has a nice synergy to it.
The car has had 4 owners and was registered 1DWP. The car was ‘stolen for components in’ the 90’s. The components in question are presumed to have been ancillaries as the engine block WR005159 and chassis are correct for the car as first registered.
The last owner began a full concours restoration of the car in 2011 and has spent over £15k on parts and mechanical engineering alone to make it the superb car it is today. He ran his own automotive bodyshop and the condition of the body and paint can only be described as suitable for Concours competition following a photographed bare shell restoration.
The restored 2144 5 cylinder power plant benefits from a Dynalynx exhaust manifold and Milltek stainless steel exhaust. These upgrades are virtually the only modifications from standard and the interior is also standard and in fine condition with the digital dashboard working perfectly having been completely overhauled.
On the road the Quattro is superb and a really engaging car to drive. It is clear to see why these cars won the hearts and minds of motorsport enthusiasts the world over. We can imagine Nigel Mansell being equally enthused by the performance of this 1980’s classic
There is a substantial history file including a full feature of the cars restoration in the Audi Driver magazine of February 2016. The ownership document and tax discs with Nigel Mansell’s name on are also on file.
A simply unique chance to own the Audi Quattro of one of the all time greats of motor racing. Where will you find another?
