Alvis TD21 DHC
‘Unique’ is a word over used in the classic car fraternity. Not in this case. A ONE OWNER car from new, collected from the factory as the FIRST series II drop head coupe, equipped with the superb 5 speed ZF gearbox, disc brakes all around and an updated front end by Graber. The prettiest of all the TD21’s.
Retaining matching numbers with full and complete service history documenting every oil change, every piece of factory and private maintenance and every single mile travelled in the car from mile 1 to date. Every tax disc and various magazine articles on the car complete a superb history file on a superb car.
The owner had a preferential relationship with the factory as evidenced by collecting the first car produced. The number 2YKM was offered by the factory and because the sole owner had another Alvis TA14 he chose ‘2’ because it was his 2nd Alvis. Charming.
A remarkable record kept by an adoring owner and his son. It’s quite a story and a fabulous car that came to us due to the advancing age of the owner. There were tears from grown men when the car was sold.
In our view when you take on a car like this you have a moral responsibility to ‘do the right thing’ with the car. There was a requirement for some restoration. But how much? We decided that this car with such a story was about preservation as opposed to restoration. This entailed removing all of the paint from the car and attending to the aluminium bodywork using the skills of our ex Bristol Cars staff. The car was then painted a subtle gunmetal metallic as per the original grey on the build sheet and bough log books. As such 2YKM is now structurally in fine fettle and ready to document another 100,000.
Mechanically, we have improved the drive train replacing aged parts with the best available today. A new fuel tank in aluminium, fuel pump, radiator core, springs and shock absorbers, all rubber bushes, ball joints, etc. Preserving the car and making it the best it can be without gutting and restoring it completely. As such it runs beautifully with the original engine powering the original 5 speed ZF gearbox. New chrome wire wheels and Blockley radial tyres make the car outwardly looks superb and it drives as it did when it left the factory on the 29th of August 1963.
The interior challenged us. Preserve or restore? We have chosen to preserve the seats. And the interior of the car. Others may have re trimmed the interior and replaced the hood. That remains an option. However, a car is only original once. Our thought was that this car has had one owner family driving it from new and as such as soon as you retrim the car all of that ‘patina’ is lost. The car interior is charming and we think that we have the balance of restoration and preservation correct. You may want to retrim the car. That’s your choice and you could argue either way on that.
Whatever you chose to do with 2YKM it is a rare car in its own right. But this history and all of the supporting documents and facts make the car unique.
