Description

This E28 will be 40years old next year and MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt. It is a car that can be used as your everyday driver. But is it good enough?

My first boss had a 2.7litre 525E as his company car back in 1985 and I used to drive it regularly on business errands for him. I had a Mark III Spitfire at the time so imagine what a luxury executive car the 525 was for me. It was a driving experience of luxury and performance like I had never seen.

So flash forward 40years and I couldn’t help but transport myself back to the day Mr Bailey (Boss) would say to me, ‘off to Birmingham (from Leicester) young Mr Fender, and don’t thrash my car!’ I did thrash his car but you would never know it because these E28 BMW’s were simply impossible to break. Most ate up immense mileages as executive company cars and did so with style, class and excellent performance and reliability. If you had an E28 5 series back in 1986 you were somebody to be admired and respected. I would argue the same status or even higher is worthy of this car today.

This E28 is a survivor that has been lightly used and deeply cherished by 3 owners and most recent for 11years. Back in the 1980’s everybody buying a new car did so in August because that is when a new registration year was signified. So this car registered 6th August 1986 was issued a ‘D’ prefix and that was to be acknowledged and admired. How things have changed. BUT throughout all that change this E28 has been cherished and used sparingly for just over 78000 miles which is verified by the original service pack, invoices and MOT’s going back to when new.

The paintwork is immaculate, I would go as far as to say ‘perfect’. The original beige cloth interior is also virtually unmarked. The original Blaupunkt Radio Cassette is still in situ and working. On the road the car sounds great because of the new bespoke stainless steel exhaust system and drives perfectly with the automatic gearbox performing perfectly. The car sits on its original 14” MV cross spoke wheels and is to all intents and purposes as it was when it was collected new back in 1986.

I will continue to cherish and improve the car with all due respect to its originality until a suitable new owners comes forward to take on this time warp, much admired quite outstanding 525E. £13995
