Description
‘The most beautiful production car ever made’ My words and belief shared by Enzo Ferrari and pretty much everybody else who loves this era of motoring history! So much has been written about the E Type and its place in automotive history. Suffice to say on most people’s top 100 cars of all time the E Type invariably finishes at number 1.
The fixed head coupe looks as sleek and visually stunning today as it did when first revealed to the public in 1961. As with most Jaguars throughout history the fixed head is more visually beautiful than the open top versions. I have had the privilege to drive over 100 E Types over the years. They are all fabulous looking in their own way but sometimes they disappoint in the driving thrill experience. Not so this car and I will elaborate later.
This the 68th produced series 1 4.2 FHC is the right up there with the nicest driving E Type I have had the pleasure of driving. The vital statistics are that this chassis 200068 rolled of the production line on the 2nd of November 1964 and was despatched to C Attwood & Sons of Wolverhampton on the 10th. The car has had very few custodians with just 3 in total and the most recent fastidious owners since April 1996. The car is a matching numbers car with the engine and body both carrying the same numbers as the Jaguar Heritage Certificate on file.
The car was completely restored in the 1990’s and there is a CD with all of the photos relating to that restoration. Additionally there is a hand written summary of all of the work sitting alongside the CD of the photos. Relating to the restoration is a thick file of invoices from specialists in the Jaguar marque. Also in the file is a photo of the most recent owner with the car holding a concours trophy for best in sports car class. He looks very proud and so he should because the car is a magnificent E Type. Additionally on file are MOT certificates back to 1976 showing 89652 miles and then picking up again in 1995 following restoration at 91252. The MOT history is complete to September 2024 and 6691miles. So we can say this is a matching numbers car for a fact and that the mileage of 106691 is credibly the total mileage of the car since despatch from Browns Lane on the 10th November 1964
Today the car presents in virtually unmarked opalescent silver which is a testament to the restoration of the and the way it has been fastidiously maintained since coming to the most recent owners in 1996. The E Type has been part of a magnificent collection for the last 30years and has been cossetted and used sparingly throughout that time. The owners now retired enjoy their vintage cars and have decided to sell the E Type to fund the restoration of a very significant pre war Aston Martin. As such what we have here is a rare rare opportunity to take custodianship of this magnificent E Type
I said earlier I would write about how the car drives. The car is fitted with polyurethane bushes and adjustable shock absorbers with 6j chrome wire wheels and excellent Blockley radial tyres. The steering is razor sharp and the geometric set up of the has pin point precision. I would expect no less knowing the owners of the car. But as a potential buyer you will be thrilled at how planted and assured this car is on the road. It really does drive as well as it looks, and it looks superb.
The engine is fully rebuilt to fast road spec and induction is through the correct triple 2” SU carburretors with exhaust via a free flowing stainless steel upgrade system. The engine keeps its cool nicely and reports excellent oil pressure to a point where we will warranty this engine for 1500 miles believing it will run for another 100,000 with no bother.
I guess you the reader will ‘get it’ that this is an outstanding example of the E Type. I hope so, because it is outstanding and I also hope the photos and video do it justice. This is a jewel of a car supplied with a magnificent history and no radio……because it doesn’t need one when you can fire up that legendary 6 cylinder twin cam and embark on a journey to anywhere you want to go.
‘Epic car’.
