Description
Rarest of the rare. The 3.4S, 250bhp XK150 roadster is super super rare. In my view these are the ultimate grand touring sports car in the XK range. I’d go as far as to say this is the best all around sports car of the entire 1950’s. A bold claim maybe, however the visually stunning and rakish 150ots really is an eyeful of sleek lines adorned by glorious chrome. It is a stunning thing. With the hood up the car looks as good as it does when neatly stowed away.
According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate this car was manufactured on the 29th August 1958 and despatched to Jaguar Cars New York on the 12th of September. There is some history from its time in the USA but relevant to now is the car returning to the UK on the 20th April 1988 with taxes paid and receipted on the accompanying HMRC Customs and Excise Import documents
Today the car is a matching numbers car and a full body off chassis nut and bolt concours restoration including conversion to right hand drive was undertaken under the instruction of owner Mr Paul West of Seaford Sussex. The work performed by Charles Robinson Classic Cars of Basingstoke and the exhaustive restoration work is documented in a 2 page letter from Mr Robinson to Mr West on file dated 12th October 1988. That restoration is the car we see today some 8895 miles and 38 years later. The restoration and subsequent owners have clearly cherished the car because it presents very nicely today.
The 150S was registered for the road and issued with a personal number plate XKJ150S. The relevance of that number doesn’t need explaining. The documentation supporting the plate allocation is noted on the file too.
Mr West sold the car at a Brooks Goodwood Festival of Speed auction on the 18th June 1994 to the most recent owner Geroge Edwards of St Helens who kept the car as part of a small car and motor cycle collection for over 30years. Described in the 1994 auction catalogue as ‘concours’ and noted as such by XK Historian David Bentley chassis number T831228DN sold for £38k plus premium back in 1994. Now the car is looking for a new custodian to use enjoy and care for this fantastic car.
The car today remains a really outstanding car and whilst there is little history it is clear the car has been well looked after. Bodily very sound with excellent door gaps and very straight panels it is clear to see the restoration back in the late 1980’s was done to an exhaustive standard. There are a few age related marks but nothing other than age related marks that show how well the car was restored. As stated this is a matching numbers car with the chassis, cylinder block and cylinder head all corresponding with the Heritage Certificate. Presented in a striking dark burgundy with matching leather trim off set by perfect chrome the car does look very very nice. The car was restored with matching bespoke leather luggage and this is with the car today as is a complete tool roll. Additionally visually the car benefits from a beautifully louvered bonnet to give a real sporting appearance
Mechanically, the car keeps good oil pressure and from referring back to MOT certificates it would appear that 8865 miles is the mileage since the car was restored. The car has a fresh MOT on file obtained by Jaguar specialist Smallman & Hall Classic Cars of Bridgnorth.
On the road the engine is very throaty, responsive and clearly has all of the 250bhp S sporting heritage still under the bonnet. Oil pressure is good and the triple 2” SU’s feed fuel to make the car a veritable rocketship with a get up and go that will surprise most modern cars on the road today. Gear change is slick and the overdrive works perfectly. There is power assisted steering which is excellent. The car has a Kenlowe fan which together with the bonnet louvres will surely keep the car cool on the hottest summer days. The S has excellent road manners and is a thrilling car to drive. We will service this car for sale but the vital signs are that this car will give many many years of fun with minimal service expenditure
In the cabin the seats are as new as are the carpets and all the trim fittings. Pretty much unmarked interior with a heater and all the dials working as they should. The soft top is in excellent condition and there is a tonneau cover which will be very useful and prevent erection of the hood except on the wettest of days.
This XK150S is a superb car. It wants for very little other than a new owner to take up the custodianship of this the final iteration of the outstanding Jaguar XK range of cars.
Fabulous
