Description

Our XK150fhc is an original 3.8litre manual with overdrive version that is presented in fantastic original order with matching numbers. A great starting position. However that does not remotely cover how truly remarkable this car is.

Accompanying this sensational driving car is the most thorough comprehensive almost forensic documented history the like of which you are unlikely to see again for any XK150. Amongst those who have owned and improved this car are British racing royalty in the form of John Coombs and Rob Walker

If you want to read the enormous history file covering every mile and penny spent on this car you will need a few hours and at least one cup of tea and a few Hob Nob biscuits. To summarise. Manufactured in early 1959 as a right hand drive 3.8 litre car with manual transmission and tunnel mounted overdrive (I love that) in red with red trim and wire wheels. The same specification and mechanical numbered components are with the car today some 90,000 miles later. The exhaustive service history supports this being the correct mileage which is virtually impossible to do on any other car that doesn’t have such a massive documented history file

The car was sent new to Jersey and the first owner Gladys Cochrane took deliver of J6465 on the 27th April 1959. The original maintenance voucher booklet is with the car and reports Jaguar Dealer St Helier Garages supplied the car and serviced on the 8th January 1960 at 2651 miles. The car came back to London Jaguar dealer Simpson motors in October of 1960 and was registered 7241ME being sold to J K Scott of Swansea with 4000 miles on the odometer. The car stayed in Wales through to 22000 to June 1967 when racing superstar Rob Walker took ownership of the car for a short while before the car was purchased for the princely sum £720 by the most recent owner in August of 1967.

Richard Woodley has been the fastidious owner of this outstanding XK for nearly 50years. What an outstanding custodian he has been. Not fit enough to drive the car now we are seeking a new owner to carry on enjoying what is a super car. The only major change to the car comes in November of 1969 when Mr Woodley contracted probably the most revered Jaguar dealer of the period John Coombs Garage of Guilford to improve the car. To any Jaguar racing man John Coombs is about as famous as you can get. Coombs, Walker and Mike Hawthorn are Jaguar royalty. Coombs reconditioned the engine improving the cylinder head and adding 2×2” SU carburretors to make the car a flying machine with improved induction and exhaust mated to the balanced 3.8 litre engine. The invoice on file to Richard Woodley in the sum of £450-2 shillings and 4 pence doesn’t seem a lot of money today but when you remember Mr Woodley bought the car for £720 you can imagine this was a major investment in performance and the same engine and 2” carburretor configuration is enjoyed today. That upgrade at 32600 miles sees the car still running and sounding strong at 90000 miles today. The reason the car runs and drives as well as it does is documented in an exhaustive account of every penny invested in this car. Every invoice and documented mileage by Jaguar dealers and specialists. Every maintenance voucher, service invoice etc is with this car. It is a massive file with a detailed accounting log summarising everything.

The car has been well used and if you see the photo of some of the event plaques on the website you get a hint that the Woodley’s where great enthusiasts and indeed still are. So enthusiastic that the 150 owners handbook is signed by Sir William Lyons himself.

I hope you are getting the sense that this is a very well cared for car that comes with a complete history and massive supporting paperwork.

So what is it like to drive? You’d expect it to be good and it really is. The car hasn’t been used for over a year but with fresh fuel and some brake work the car drives very well. As well as any XK150fhc I have ever driven and I’ve driven over 100. The engine is very responsive and the car steers and handles like a very well serviced car. The oil pressure is good and the car keeps good temperature. Gear change is smooth and snicks nicely between gears. The overdrive is mounted on the gearbox tunnel and it is a lovely thing to operate and engages perfectly. Very little wind noise and the cabin is a lovely place to sit. The little details are all there to be seen on this car. They define good from great. This car is great. You can see it has everything ‘right’ about it. It is a real candidate for a ‘pride of ownership’ concours award.

The huge history file is stored in bespoke 2 piece leather luggage to finish of what is an outstanding car. You will go a long long way to find better
